So I finally managed to convince the boys to see Captain America this afternoon, and I have to say one thing right away: I loved the Cap's outfits.

I really liked him running around Brooklyn barefoot in the too-short khakis. But my absolute favorite was when he was wearing the chorus girl's presumably fake helmet, and had his motorcycle jacket pulled over his ill-fitting USO jumpsuit. Plus the goggles.

And then he kept the tinkerbell red boots when he got to design his own outfit!

If I were more of a Freudian than I am, I would go on at length here about the difference between the last movie I saw, which relied so heavily on Harry manfully pointing and waving what Aunt Petunia calls "his thing" and the, well, roundness, of Captain America's awesome shield. It's slightly concave, ridged roundness. Cervical symbolism, that's what I'd call it. Cap's cap. Looks nice on a boy

The whole thing was so joyously coded as "chorus girl" attire that I wondered whether I could put Peggy in a man's uniform and get a fill for the gender-play square on my [community profile] kink_bingo card by pairing them.

If I were a Baudrillardian, however, I would be dancing with delight over how much of a simulacra Captain America is. I mean, he plays himself before he ever becomes himself, y'know? He's not really a captain, he just plays one in the movies. He grows to fit the mold. I could go on. Is that stuff about him being a USO act before he's a super hero part of the comic canon? Because it's kind of fascinating.

Anyway, I could go on like this all day--but I'll spare you. I actually really liked the movie--some of the visuals were stunning, I thought, and Chris Evans was adorable. Plus I have always suspected that parts of Brooklyn are riddled with secret high tech labs.

My ten-year old, the narratologist in the family, didn't like it as much. Why? asked I. Because the whole movie happened in the beginning and the rest was just fighting, said he. Which, yeah, true enough.

Maybe that's why by the end of it I was mostly thinking about whether I could fill the "medical kink" square on my card with a fic about just how exciting it is when all those injections of magic juice go into Steve at once.

Ah, the pleasures of seeing summer movies with one's children.

They dragged me out of the theater before I could see the Avengers trailer, however, so I'm still missing an image of Jeremy Renner as Hawkeye.
