I finally wrote out the pattern for the trapezoid shawl I made earlier this year. It's my first time writing out a pattern, but I *think* it all makes sense.

1) Some interesting posts at Henry Jenkins blog about the Peabody Awards process and disruption in the entertainment industry. "So, Peabody meets 3 times face-to-face. And it is an award that is decided across genres and platforms: television, radio, podcasting, and interactive, which is games and VR, etc. And across genre: entertainment, news, documentary, etc. But in particular, it's decided by a unanimous vote of a board of 18...who represent lots of different facets. There's critics, which include academics and TV critics, media executives, writers, and showrunners. ..which is different from a campaign for 26,000 voting members, in which you have no control of what they've watched and what they've not watched...Aziz Ansari was famous for coming to our show and saying, “You know, this is pretty cool. It's like you watch all of our shit, and you just decided it was good, and we didn't have to go to a bunch of weird-ass parties and stuff"

Two other factors: "It's not just celebrating entertainment. It's trying to talk about the ways that popular culture and entertainment can deeply shape who we are and want to be as a people, as empathetic citizens in the world" and "also...is it a story that matters? So, sometimes the craft can be brilliant, but it may not be a story that matters." Read more... )

2) A few more notes about Silent Witness as I move into S26. S23 seemed a really unusual season, enough so that I wondered about its production dates. Read more... )

3) Watched a documentary on the BeeGees which, like a lot of documentaries, goes very light on the time after their popularity peaked. (That was one thing the Billy Joel and Bon Jovi ones avoided). Read more... )

4) A Spy Among Friends was well written and interesting to watch but I kept constantly thinking about the 2003 Cambridge Spies which I saw last year and suspect it's much closer to the truth. Read more... )

5) Just a few comments about the Emmys, mostly in how unsurprising it was that Stephen Colbert finally won an Emmy for Best Show more because voters were jolted into a show of support. Yet John Oliver won yet again, twice. (Particular irony given the broadcast was on CBS).

Otherwise can't say it was entertaining and I wish a lot of stuff not involved in handing out awards had been cut. The tribute to Gilmore Girls seemed to really exemplify "too little, too late" since it and so many shows from the WB had been overlooked through sheer snobbery decades ago, when the attention would have done more good.

2 Purrcys, doomscrolling

Sometimes Purrcy is just such a funny little gremlin, wiggling around lovingly, showing the trap that is the soft soft underbelly.

Purrcy the tuxedo tabby wiggles upside down, showing his belly, looking very silly and touchable and not at all like someone who will grab any hand that infringes his airspace.

In college I got in the habit of taking my shower at night to avoid the rush & I never stopped. Nowadays Purrcy often comes in after I'm done to Stalk the Wild Drips, and he'll mew at me if there aren't enough.

Purrcy the tuxedo tabby is gazing intently up a wet shower wall, waiting for a Wild Drip to appear

This past week was officially Too Much. I've been spending too much time on social media, doomscrolling and distractionscrolling. And then reading things to distract my self, and playing particularly pointless games, which in my case is using our NYTimes Games subscription to play Tiles over & over & over again, especially the New Haven tileset, which is just colors, no patterns.

I've got a lot to *do*, but I'm so agitated by the Horrors. I was really worried last week that we were heading for a full Reichstag Fire event. Now I've *got* to wean myself off social media, which at this point is just Bluesky, and buckle down and deal with my to-do list. Maybe I'll try adding a sentence to my DW post draft every time I feel tempted to open it up again, see how that works.

Nomination Coordination Station 2025

WARNING: Do NOT submit nominations here. Post for coordination ONLY.

This post is where people declare what they have nominated, or ask other people to nominate for them. So if you do comment and/or add your nominations to the spreadsheet, that's great, because it helps other people decide what to nominate, but it WILL NOT result in your fandoms or characters being in the tagset. The only place to nominate is the Yuletide tagset. Use the comments on this post and the coordination Google spreadsheet to coordinate nominations with others.

  • For information about nominating fandoms and characters, what is eligible for nomination, and other important links and announcements, refer to [community profile] yuletide_admin.

  • Nominations run Monday 15th to Friday 26th September. Nominations will be approved after that time.

  • Before tags are approved (after September 26th), you can only see your own nominations.

  • You can nominate up to 5 fandoms and up to 4 characters in each fandom.

Please copy and paste the following information to comment on this post. Every item is optional except fandom.

  • A nomination is something you plan to nominate. A request is something you're hoping someone else will nominate for you, because you ran out of slots.

  • View and edit the google sheet here: Yuletide 2025 Nomination Coordination Station.

  • If you can add your information to the spreadsheet yourself, please do! That would really help. PLEASE DO NOT SORT THE SHEET. If you want to view the list by nominated fandoms, use the autogenerated "sort by fandom" tabs.

  • During the nomination period, the spreadsheet will get re-sorted by username daily at (approx) 6PM GMT, to keep the data tidier.

Help Wanted

If you have a few minutes and enjoy a bit of data entry, please volunteer to update the spreadsheet with information the comments in this post! If you do, add the data from the comment to the spreadsheet and reply to the original comment with Added to spreadsheet.

(h/t to [personal profile] ashling for the original coordination station post text and spreadsheet!)

Dear Trick or Treat Creator

Hooray for spooky season! I'm requesting all horror movies this year, and I like a wide range of tones, ratings, and darkness levels. Whatever you choose to create, be it fucked up and terrifying or subtly spooky or darkly sweet, I'm sure I'll enjoy it!

For my single character requests, I'm open to any & or / ship involving those characters (including poly ships and character/OC), as well as a requested character alone. Shipping requested characters with each other is great, but not required! I'm happy with anything from explicit smut to ambiguously shippy close friendship to fully platonic gen to solo characters. Canonical partners can be dealt with however works best for the character/ship and the story--not mentioning them at all, AUs where the canon ship aren't together, happily open relationships, infidelity, I'm not picky.

I requested Art, Fic, and Trick for everything, and additionally requested Treat for a couple fandoms. For tricks, I love extremely dark, violent, or disturbing content, but I also love gently spooky, atmospheric works about autumn or Halloween or generally dark, chilly, spooky, or sad things. For treats, I love a lightly spooky/autumnal vibe as well, or something funny, cozy, or smutty. I like a touch of darkness even in my treats, but don't stress about not making it dark enough.

Trick Likes
Spooky atmospheric locations, dark takes on folklore/myths/fairy tales, gore and violence, romantic or intimate takes on cannibalism/murder/violence/necrophilia, anything dark or scary or gross or tragic involving dead bodies, noncon/dubcon, unsafe/unhealthy sex or kink practice, bad or bittersweet endings, major character death, dark supernatural creature/monster AUs (werewolves, witches, vampires, selkies, pookas, demons, ghosts, etc), nightmares/visions/prophetic dreams, unreliable narrators

Treat Likes
Cozy autumn nights, Halloween celebrations (parties, costumes, movie screenings, trick or treating), horror comedy, affectionate banter between characters, sensory comforts like food porn/hot baths/warm blankets, hurt/comfort or whump, a fun and crazy night, lighter supernatural creature/monster AUs, forced physical intimacy with someone you're attracted to, first times, domestic cohabitation

Art Likes
Interesting color palates (bold colors, greyscale, high contrast, very limited or unconventional color palates), pastiches of classical art, pastiches of movie posters, tarot inspired art, art of the character in a specific AU (as a supernatural creature, in historical dress, with costumes/props from another fandom), art of the character in a fancy outfit, touching/physical intimacy between characters, nonpenetrative sex, bondage, kneeling, hand or forehead kissing, art more focused on setting/location or mood/vibe than characters

My fic likes are pretty well covered in my Trick/Treat sections, but I want to specifically opt into 2nd and 1st person POV and unusual formats or stylistic choices.

Why should I nominate?
To create the pool of fandoms available for this year’s Yuletide. More at AO3.

What can I nominate?
Up to 5 rare fandoms and 4 characters you want to request or offer. See what’s eligible here.

When can I nominate?
From now until 26 September, at 9pm UTC. Please check the date and time in your own timezone! Until then, you can also edit your nominations.

Where can I nominate?
Tag set.

Who can nominate?
People with AO3 accounts who intend to take part in Yuletide. You may use only one account for nominations. If you don’t have an AO3 account, add yourself immediately to the invite queue or email the mods.

How do I nominate?
First, check what's eligible. Then go to the tag set on AO3, and make sure you're logged in. Click "Nominate" at top right, enter your fandom and character choices, and click Submit at the bottom. Check the results on the page to make sure you entered them correctly. You don't have to submit all your choices at once - you can change your mind and add or edit your nominations until nominations close.

If you need to explain or argue for your fandom, please make a case for it on the Evidence Post as well as nominating on AO3.

Do I have to use fandom tags that exist on AO3?
Please do, unless:
  • There is no tag for your fandom (it's totally okay to nominate something with no fic!). Make one up, following this guide.

  • The tag that exists on the Archive describes a larger fandom with many parts and your fandom is one distinct part or subset. In this case, instead of using the tag that exists already, please use a tag that describes your specific subfandom.

  • The tag that exists on the Archive has the words 'All Media Types' or '& Related Fandoms' in it. Please don't use a label that includes those words without arguing for it on the Evidence Post
  • .

Please label fandoms according to the Archive's wrangling style. If you’re not sure how to label your fandom, please ask.

When will I see what was nominated?
Not for a while, sorry! You can share what you've nominated and coordinate with other participants at [community profile] yuletide. Moderators will approve tags starting approximately 28 September, and will release the tagset in early October. We will post questions about nominations between now and sign-ups, so please keep an eye on this community.

The Additional Tags at the bottom of the tag set are a new feature from 2023. Here is a post explaining how they work and some background (1, 2).

Disambiguation
When a character name could appear in more than one fandom, or is common, or short, please put information in brackets after the name to show where it belongs. For example:
-Bonnie Parker (Bonnie and Clyde 1967)
-Robin Hood (Prince of Thieves)
-Tulku (The Shadow 1994)
-Leonardo da Vinci (Da Vinci's Demons)

Disambiguation will also solve your problems if you receive the error message: “This character was rejected because it was nominated in another fandom.” If that happens, add more information to the name and resubmit.

Worldbuilding "character"
In most fandoms, you may nominate worldbulding as a character tag, in the format Worldbuilding (Your Fandom Name). However, mods will not accept "worldbuilding" nominations for RPF fandoms or where it is nominated without explanation for a purely mundane canon - there should be a clear fictional element to worldbuild around. See 2021's discussion post about worldbuilding; you may also find recent requests helpful to see how people have used this option.

Other character tips
If you submit a character that is new or rarely used on AO3, a suggestion from AO3 may appear in bold and in brackets next to your nomination after it has been submitted. This is okay, and does not mean that your nomination will be automatically changed. However, if you don't have any disambiguation information in brackets after the name, you may want to add it, because there may be another character with that name. Even if your character has two names, such as “Harrison Chase” or “Elizabeth Burke”, that name may appear in multiple unrelated fandoms.

RPF and Anthropomorphic fandoms must be nominated with characters. Other fandoms will be approved without characters if none are nominated.

Superhero and similar names may belong to more than one character. For example, Batman’s Robin could mean Dick Grayson, Jason Todd, or Stephanie Brown, among others. Please make sure it’s clear which one you mean - in cases where it’s ambiguous, please use their “wallet” name.

We don’t accept group nominations if the group contains named, distinct characters (for example, under Chalion Saga - Lois McMaster Bujold, we wouldn’t accept The Five Gods as a character). However, we will allow distinct groups that do not contain individual, named characters. If it may be difficult for us to determine whether this applies to your nomination, please comment in the Evidence post.

Check your nominations!
After submitting, check that your nominations have gone through: click away from the tag set, click back, and, if still logged into the same account, you should be able to see "My Nominations" at top right. Check the spelling and formatting! You can edit your nominations until the nominations period ends.

Enjoy!

PS: as pre-approved nominations can only be seen by mods, consider discussing your nominations with other participants on [community profile] yuletide or at the Discord. In particular, please see this year's RPF discussion post.

Oops all Battleship edition.

Media Consumed

I watched a bunch of great movies this summer. I don't have the energy to write reviews, but I'm happy to talk about any of them in the comments!

The entire Mission Impossible franchise
Past Lives
Superman (2025)
Weapons
The Company of Wolves
Dog Soldiers
Jaws (50th anniversary screening, rewatch)

The only proper new fandom I got into this summer was the Locked Tomb series, after reading the first half of the first book back in 2021. I've always been confused when this series gets broadly marketed to anyone who likes lesbian sci-fi, because these books are fucking weird and gross and horny and full of dumb millennial internet humor. Gideon/Harrow is all my favorite goth grimdark lady/knight, brains/brawn, tiny dom/big sub fealty tropes with heaps of sarcasm and gross body horror and character death piled on top. I also love that this series is unapologetically multishippy, with tons of side characters/ships and both Gideon and Harrow spending big chunks of pagetime flirting with other girls. Add me to the cohort of people desperately awaiting the release date of Alecto the Ninth.

In Progress/Upcoming

I really wanted to sign up for Jump Scare, but was too burned out from Battleship at the time. I'm planning on signing up for Trick or Treat, possibly with a full slate of horror movie fandoms. I'm also tossing around ideas for a spooky or kinky flash exchange.

There were bugs up on the rafter above Purrcy 's head. I don't think he thought they were prey but they sure were *fascinating*.

Purrcy the tuxedo tabby is lying on top of a cardboard box, gazing upward with blown pupils and fascinated whiskers. He looks both eager and wary, like he can't quite believe what he's seeing.

The House in the Cerulean Sea by TJ Klune

This was a sweet albeit kind of heavy handed story about magical orphans facing societal prejudice and an unfeeling bureaucracy and learning how to understand their own self worth, guided by an awkward trio of queer adults who are also struggling to get their shit together. The speech Linus gives DICOMY at the end is way over the top but otherwise the book makes its points reasonably well.

But I struggled to completely connect with it. Ironically, though many of the reviews I found online criticized it for blasphemy and anti-Christian ideology, I actually found it too Christian. One of the magical children is the son of Satan, purportedly the Antichrist, and is endowed with reality warping powers and internal voices urging him to destroy the world. The book's heroic characters insist he's merely an imaginative and sensitive 6 year old who if properly loved will not destroy the world, but I found that even taking a side on this question was too theological on a path I was uninterested in following the book to. Either Arthur and Linus are right and Lucy isn't actually the Antichrist but merely a potential Antichrist, or they're wrong and the pull of his fated destiny isn't about his choices but about the role the prophecy will force him into. Klune created the book's worldbuilding, he can pick his own answer to this question, but if you're not invested in Christian eschatology it's not really an interesting debate.

The last week or so the weather has gotten cool at night, which means open windows and a cuddly Purrcy at my feet every time I lie down or wake up. It's a good life.

Purrcy the tuxedo tabby is at the foot of the bed and has wiggled onto his back, exposing the soft, fluffy underbelly and dangling his white paws. He looks perfectly cute and loving and not at all like someone who would attack any hand that tried to pet the tummy (IT'S A TRAP)

The Raven Scholar by Antonia Hodgson

This year's Book I Read Because Multiple People Raved About It in the Worldcon Discord. The first book in a secondary world fantasy series with lots of complicated political intrigue, the rave reviews were extremely enthusiastic but also quite vague. And now that I have read it, I understand the vagueness. It's a hard book to describe. It's constantly shifting and transforming, with twist after twist leaving you constantly unsure what the book is actually about and where it is going. But the twists are solid and well supported and never pull you out of the world of the book. But it was an exhilarating read and I highly recommend it.
