I ended up traveling almost all of the week between Christmas and New Year’s, just getting back last night, and so am only now getting around to Yuletide comments and reveals—there are still plenty of stories I want to read!

This year I wrote three fics for Yuletide: my assignment and two pinch hits.

City of Refuge (2267 words) by ariadnes_string
Chapters: 1/1
Fandom: True Detective
Rating: Mature
Warnings: No Archive Warnings Apply
Relationships: Rustin "Rust" Cohle/Martin "Marty" Hart
Characters: Rustin "Rust" Cohle, Martin "Marty" Hart, Maggie Hart
Additional Tags: Synesthesia, Post-Series
Summary:

Rust tells himself they’re memories, though they come with the force of hallucinations. What it feels like is being unstuck in time.

This was my assignment. I put True Detective down on my offer list as a last minute impulse, and the minute I did it, I was sure that’s what I would be assigned. And so it was. I re-watched the whole series in preparation (something I (shamefully) usually don’t do), and was struck again by how amazing so much of it is—the performances, the cinematography, the soundtrack, the writing through the first four or five episodes. The casting of the minor parts is particularly striking on second viewing; everyone except the leads looks like they’ve spent their lives in poverty in southern Louisiana. I’d forgotten that the thing I liked best about it is how trippy the POV is: Rust’s hallucinations, the strange symbols appearing out of nowhere, the time shifts. Sadly, however, the last few episodes were even more disappointing they were the first time around, for reasons I already belabored at the time.

I enjoyed writing this one a lot. The request was for curtain!fic, but for the reasons stated above I tried to inflect that as much as I could with the stuff I liked from the first part of the series. I think this is my favorite of the three fics, since, through Rust’s voice, I got to indulge my kink for elaborate metaphor and altered perceptive states. Which was possibly more enjoyable for me than for other people.

The News From Home (1993 words) by ariadnes_string
Chapters: 1/1
Fandom: Imperial Radch Series - Ann Leckie
Rating: General Audiences
Warnings: No Archive Warnings Apply
Relationships: Skaaiat Awer/Awn Elming
Characters: Awn Elming, Justice of Toren One Esk Nineteen | Breq, Skaaiat Awer
Summary:

Awn always enjoyed reading her sister's poetry.

I picked up this pinch hit in the very first round of pinch hits, because I wanted to try writing Ancillary Justice fic, and the request for more about Awn was appealing. Easier said than done! Trying to write this gave me even greater respect for Ann Leckie’s world-building than I had already. I ended up sticking quite close to the novel, though I wish I’d been able to come up with something more imaginative (there are some brilliant, imaginative stories for this fandom in the Yuletide archive). Still, I think it came out okay—I like the way it’s structured around the snippets of poetry, at least.

With a Girl Like You (2723 words) by ariadnes_string
Chapters: 1/1
Fandom: Endeavour (TV)
Rating: General Audiences
Warnings: No Archive Warnings Apply
Relationships: Monica Hicks/Endeavour Morse
Characters: Monica Hicks, Endeavour Morse, Peter Jakes
Additional Tags: Misses Clause Challenge, Chromatic Yuletide
Summary:

After the events of "Neverland," Monica has three significant encounters with DS Jakes.

And then I picked up this late pinch hit. I love Monica as a character, but I’ve never thought of writing her POV (I’m usually so focused on Thursday). Once I got into it, though, I really enjoyed thinking about how she’d try to understand the mess that’s left after “Neverland.” If I’d had more time, though, I would have loved to do more with the idea of her coming from a West Indian family.

Anyway, it was a great Yuletide—I loved my gifts, and my recipients seemed to like theirs, and the few stories I’ve read so far have been excellent. Happy New Year, all!

Dang! Look at you!

You should write more Endeavour. I liked that story. I'm unable to string sentences together these days, so I just left kudos... That is the state of my compositional brain.
