Happy Mother's Day to everyone, whether you do your mothering a traditional setting, or give your care, comfort and unconditional love in other ways!

We didn't do much of anything this weekend, except that we managed to see Shaun of the Dead, Hot Fuzz and Pirates! Band of Misfits and still have time for the first outdoor pool swim of the year.

I was negligent about re-advertising it this weekend ( see:family, family, family), but Running Hot II is bubbling along nicely. I put fics on the master list for J2, The Unusuals, Grimm and Pirates!Band of Misfits (the last one is mine--couldn't resist after seeing the movie). I'm not closing it up any time soon, so please come play!

Hope you all had a good spring weekend!

You know what I missed after not watching House for several years? Hugh Laurie's face, that's what.

It's not just that he does such glorious reaction shots, it's that his reactions make you believe he's really watching and listening--and seeing and hearing more than the average bear. And when House is reacting to Wilson? Well, it doesn't get any better than that. I mean, all Holmeses love their Watsons, but the way House loves Wilson is something else.

Ahem. Feel free to discuss 8x19 and 8x20, just know that I know nothing about what happened before these episodes.

Also: Running Hot II is simmering along nicely. Click the link for prompts for things like:

Inception
Whitechapel
Farscape
Downton Abbey
Warrior (2011)
Pirates! Band of Misfits
Phineas and Ferb
And many more!

The master list of this year's fills is here and the AO3 collection for both years is here

In which I catch up with the rest of the world

By seeing Avengers and reading The Hunger Games (okay, listening to it, on audiobook).

y'all already knew that I wasn't a comic book gal, right? )

and there's a reason I don't read much YA fiction )

I know, I know, I'm a grump.

In more important news, there is a masterlist now for Running Hot II, with fics from H50, White Collar, Sherlock and SPN. There are many more fabulous prompts from many fandoms including Avangers awaiting fills at the post. We also have AO3 collections for this year and last year. If you wrote something last year and posted it to the Archive you can edit it to include it in last year’s collection (and please do!!)

Running Hot II is off to a prompt-tacular start (click banner to go the lj site).

There are prompts up for H50, SPN, Sherlock, White Collar, Grimm, MI4, The Unusuals, ReGenesis, The Avengers, Burn Notice, Merlin, Firefly, and probably some other excellent fandoms I'm forgetting. Come by and play--leave a prompt, fill one, or just enjoy!

In other h/c news: I know I've been sporadic in my journal reading for the past few months weeks, but why did no one tell me that the most fic-like on-screen h/c I may have ever seen was going on on House this week? I watched last night, and even though I haven't followed the show for years, I am clearly going to have to watch the last few episodes of the series, even though I'm sure they're going to rip my heart out.

And a question: if I were to take myself to a movie tomorrow, which of these is the most likely to help me forget my troubles/give me have a good cry: The Avengers; The Hunger Games; 21 Jump Street; other.

See you at the meme!

That's right--we're finally ready to do it again!

It's been almost a year since the first one, but y'all remember how to play, right? It's a multi-fandom fever!fic comment meme.

Starts tomorrow, 5/4/12, to run as long as people are still filling prompts. Hosted by [livejournal.com profile] ariadnes_string.

Get those prompt wheels turning in your head and spread the word!

Here's the other remix. You've probably seen it already if you follow AO3, but I've decided to archive them here too. This is the pinch hit, and I was in such a state when I wrote it I can barely remember doing it. Any hotness that remains derives entirely from the original fic.

Title: Red Line Overload (the Lytton Strachey remix)
Fandom: H50
Pairing: Steve/Danny
Rating: a hard R
Word count: ~1,400
Warnings/Spoilers: n/a
Disclaimer: not mine, no profit

a/n: this is a remix of [livejournal.com profile] templemarker's excellent fic, Red Line Overload.
a/n: parenthetical title taken from the man in Steve's anecdote.

Summary:
All those years in Jersey, Danny was a good cop because he knew when to walk towards danger and when to walk away.

Then he moved to Hawaii and that knowledge went to shit.

Here's one of my remix fics--the assigned one, not the pinch hit.

Title: Only Butterflies
Rating: R
Pairing: Steve/Danny (minor Steve/Catherine)
Warnings/Spoilers: n/a (takes place pre-series and S1)
Word count: 4.480
Disclaimer: not mine, not profit.

a/n: this is a remix of [livejournal.com profile] pollitt's lovely fic, Prepared Answers.
a/n: thank you to [livejournal.com profile] destina and [livejournal.com profile] topaz119 for the very helpful betas!
a/n: also on AO3

Summary: It was harder than Steve expected to get used to having a home.

So, I have watched the first four episodes of season two of Game of Thrones and I have learned two things:

1. HBO likes boobs

2. Richard Madden somehow upped his hotness quotient greatly since season one. Or maybe everyone just looks hotter with a giant CGI wolf following them around.

I think that might be it for me, though. I don't entirely blame HBO. This is just the point--the rise of the Theon Greyjoy plot arc--at which I lost interest in the books. The gratuitous sour grimness perhaps? The increasing ratio of torture scenes? YMMV, obviously.

I am also up to date with Grimm, though I haven't posted on it for a while. I clicked on the Grimm tag on tumblr the other day, and was dismayed to find if not shipping wars, at least shipping skirmishes. I think you all know how I feel about that.

but let me just say (spoilers) )

And I think I've mentioned how much I've been enjoying Awake? It's like someone turned Freud's essay on "Mourning and Melancholia" into a TV series.

Remix Redux went live this afternoon and I got the most delightful remix of my Downey films story, A Beautiful Pea-Green Boat.

It's called Two Men in a Boat (to say nothing of the fog), and, as in the original, Holmes and Watson spend some time stranded in a lifeboat. The remixer has added all kinds of hilarious and spot-on details as to how they got there, wrapped it up in a fantastically acerbic Watson voice and made it all far more in character than than my version was. Go read it--it will completely brighten your day!

And while I'm getting you to read things, let me send you to the Five Acts stories people wrote for me

[livejournal.com profile] greenhoodloxley wrote The Lash of his Tongue (Esca/Marcus NC-17) -- a fabulous, movie-canon, verbal humiliation fic.

and [livejournal.com profile] hiddencait wrote a Walsh/Beaumont (the Unusuals, NC-17) fic featuring steaming hot impact play fic (it's up on AO3 here)

The meme was a complete bust for me due to the ongoing domestic crisis--I didn't write a thing. But maybe I can go back later and write something for these guys.

Speaking of writing: I wrote two fics for remix. One I wrote weeks ahead of the deadline, had double-beta'd and carefully edited. One was a pinch hit I wrote in an almost literal fugue state of sleep deprivation and anxiety due to the ongoing domestic crisis, didn't have beta'd at all, and posted at the last possible minute. Guess which one has more than twice the hits than the other atm? I despair of myself as a fic writer sometimes.

I keep meaning to do an actual TV write up, but tonight is not the night. I'll just tell you that son #2 and I have been consoling ourselves with the DVD of MI4, which does not pale upon re-watching, especially certain scenes involving tall buildings. I've come to see that Tom Cruise's surprisingly perfect comic timing is the true star of the movie.

Let's just take a moment to think about this cast: Noomi Rapace, Michael Fassbender, Idris Elba, Charlize Theron, Guy Pearce. And others.

Yum.

Here's my fic for [livejournal.com profile] purimgifts. No opportunity to write a Jewish character this year, but I thought, well, Kono and Chin are cousins just like Esther and Mordecai, so why not!

Title: Kuini Hou (The New Queen)
Rating: PG, gen
Word Count: ~3K
Disclaimer: not mine, no profit.

a/n: loosely based on The Book of Esther.
a/n: the terms of the exchanges were three ficlets, each not to exceed 1,000 words. I've kept to the word limits in reposting, even though, obviously, the story could be much longer.

Summary: Kono goes undercover to protect the things she believes in.

Usually, when I have a free Sunday morning, I try to get up reasonably early (~7:30) and go to Mysore. But this weekend I practiced the yoga pose of sleep. I was out latish Sat. night at a work-related dinner, and then up even later finishing my [livejournal.com profile] purimgifts fic, and so didn’t go to sleep until 1:30. I woke up at 7:30 or so, and thought screw this. And I didn’t wake up again until 10:30. Can’t remember the last time I did that. It might have been in high school.

Anyway, 28 hours of freedom is not so much when you spend 9 sleeping and 4 at a work dinner, so I hardly caught up at all on TV. I did watch, out of curiosity, the House episode in which Jeremy Renner plays a dissolute rock singer. And enjoyed it very much—I forgot how much I like S4 House and I don’t think I’d seen that one before.

Nor did I realize that this image, that you see all the time on the interwebz, if from House of all things!

So, it's been a wearisome week here at Chez String. The week started with a two hour snow-delay at the boys' school and is ending with a Teacher Work Day. In other words: job, what job?

But let's skip the angst and go straight to the trivial, shall we?

Fandom: Mission: Impossible--Ghost Protocol
Rating: PG (minor language), gen.
Warnings: none
Word Count: ~9.2K
Disclaimer: not mine, no profit.

a/n: originally written for this prompt at the [livejournal.com profile] ghotocol_kink meme and posted anonymously over there. I've cleaned it up some and fixed at least one glaring continuity error.
a/n: title from The Band, "The State I'm In."

Summary: Ethan had five or six hours before the poison kicked in. Plenty of time to complete the mission, right?

I had another free weekend, for ongoing Familial Reasons, and for those same reasons spent a lot of time on Saturday purposefully trying not to think about stuff. You know the drill: run, movie, TV—though I did manage to have a dinner with a friend this time.

Luckily, A Dangerous Method was still playing in town. And you know, I have to say that, despite the fact that

Ann Patchett's State of Wonder )

It does however, often make me think of this:

I watched a couple of episodes of The Unusuals because there it is, on Netflix, and giggled over the fact that one of Jeremy Renner’s very first lines is, “This isn’t a Bourne movie, you know.”

ETA: I love the South, you know I love the South. What I don’t love? The boys’ school being delayed two hours on the strength of an eighth of an inch of snow that only stuck to the freaking grass.

Actually, probably more like blonde Mack trucks.

I was supposed to be in New York City this morning for some interesting work-related stuff, but I had to cancel due to ongoing family circumstances. So, yeah, feeling a little sorry for myself, but, hey, at least TV has been consoling.

I know that this journal has been inhabited mostly by pocket commandos of late, but hey, let’s hear it for the big blond guys:

Southland 4x04

I don’t think it’s a spoiler for the episode to say that I have never loved John Cooper more.

And, for the first time, I porn battled. If you read the fic, it might help to know that Stephen is played by this guy and Weir is played by Robb Stark.

Title: War Endless War
Fandom: Birdsong (the 2012 BBC miniseries only, b/c I remember bugger all about the book)
Rating: NC-17
Pairing: Stephen Wraysford/Michael Weir
Warning: very slight dubcon.
Word Count: ~700 wds.
Disclaimer: not mine, no profit.
a/n: for the prompts: first time, virgin, trauma, loss, comfort

Summary: "What did you mean, it's not for you?" Stephen asks. He can hear the edge in his voice, sharper than the knife in his pocket.

read it on the porn battle post
