You know, if nothing else, I love that you even asked these questions. I imagine you saw that post I made some time back about different categories of fic being written in SPN, and what interested me about it was exactly what it is people wanted to be exploring in canon. For example, just the fact that it so often seems to be Dean who is "damaged" in some way, tells me something about how people seem to see him.
So, the shifting landscape of their relationship is difficult, as protector becomes protected, caretaker becomes the recipient of care, but it is happening under conditions of greater love and intimacy than even SPN S1 allowed for.
And given my age group I wonder how many people can relate to this in their own lives.
In other words, the fics take the problem of role reversal or hierarchy shift that has perhaps always been inherent in the Winchester fraternal narrative, import it back to S1, and watch it to take place under conditions that don’t allow for the kind of rupture we’ve seen on TV.
Hmm, yes, because leaving is easy. Which is kind of what Bobby told Dean. And as you said, I appreciate that the show has been willing to do what they're doing with the brothers.
