I'm afraid I'm a bit of a cynic ;) I'm sure SPN fandom was once happy and pleasant and Kripke was thrilled he had fans. I have yet to be in on the ground floor of a fandom when it's like that actually, just later on when all the battle lines are drawn! Though yes, I've certainly seen it get worse in SPN.
