Coattails (Sherlock/Whitechapel, gen)

This is for [livejournal.com profile] alizarin_nyc, who unleashed the dogs of war, or unlocked the bunny hutch, or something, on this particular combo. It's not really a fic, more of an extended riff of the "what if x met y variety." No plot to speak of, just me feeling out the Whitechapel characters.

Title: Coattails
Fandoms: Sherlock, Whitechapel.
Rating: PG, gen, no pairings
Warnings/Spoilers: no--no plot spoilers for either show.
Word count: ~1.8K
Disclaimer: not mine, no profit.

Summary: Sherlock didn’t make friends, but every once in a while—every once in a great while—someone befriended him.

Reciprocity (Sherlock BBC, gen)

I have no idea why this ended up so long—it really is just a comment fic at heart.

Title: Reciprocity
Fandom: Sherlock BBC
Rating: PG (gen)
Genre: h/c
Word count: ~4.5K
Disclaimer: not mine, no profit.
a/n: written for this prompt at Running Hot: Feverish Lestrade on a case, attempting to tough it out and refusing to admit he's ill, and Sherlock being the one to notice and forcibly escort him home..
a/n: Although this is, in its weird way, Sherlock/Lestrade, it has nothing to do with any of the other flavors of Sherlock/Lestrade I have going.

Summary: Lestrade is ill. John is bossy. And Sherlock is not quite as heartless as he means to be.

Certain Events in Lambeth (Sherlock/Lestrade, NC-17)

Title: Certain Events in Lambeth
Rating: nc-17
Pairing: Sherlock/Lestrade
Genre: pre-series
Warning: non-con, of the aliens-made-them-do-it variety, except with no aliens.
Word Count: ~2.5K
Disclaimer: Not mine, no profit.

a/n: written for [livejournal.com profile] brighteyed_jill for the 5 Acts Meme: Round Four. The act was: non-con.
a/n: not part of my Sherlock/Jewish!Lestrade series.

Summary: While Lestrade was working his way up through the ranks he pulled a few hard years in Narcotics. That time had included three stints undercover. He hadn’t liked them much, but he’d gotten the job done all the same. He’d grown his hair out a bit, worn clothes that let his muscles and his service tattoo show, ratcheted up his accent and kept his eyes dead. Only once did anyone ever come close to making him as a copper.

A blue macaw, sometimes (and a couple of recs)

So there was some talk of the boys and I going to see Thor on Sunday, but in the end we went to see the G-rated Rio, which is about a blue macaw boy chick stolen from the Brazilian rainforest, and reared by a bookstore owner in Minnesota, who is then brought back to Brazil to mate with a girl macaw (to preserve the species, you know!). Adventures ensue, and Blu, the boy macaw, who never learned to fly in Minnesota, eventually finds his wings through love. As one does.

It wasn't the best plotted animated movie I've ever seen, though pretty to look at, what with the tropical birds and all. Still, we found it endearing because it reminded us of our pet Cockatiel, Gerry, who also had a hard time learning to fly (and still doesn't do it right)--though he was hand-raised in North Raleigh, rather than being snatched up by the illegal bird trade.

The funniest thing about the movie is that Blu, the boy macaw, is voiced by Jesse Eisenberg, so I kept imagining a different movie in which Jewel, the girl macaw dumps him, and he goes off in a huff to invent "BeakBook" in revenge. But birds apparently don't get hung up on those sorts of things, so Blu and Jewel flew off into the Brazilian nature reserve to make babies instead.

It also reminded me of this awesome Sherlock bird!fic I read recently. I am not much for pet stories, but, obviously, I have a big soft spot for birds, and this story works like a charm. Even if birds aren't your thing, it's still a wonderful John-Sherlock-Lestrade friendship fic.

The Case of the Unexpected Guest by [profile] thirdbird_fic

Also, let me draw your attention to the fantastic Five Acts fill [livejournal.com profile] brighteyed_jill wrote for me--the acts are fever, touch and dancing, and it's John/Sherlock (gen)--do I really need to say anything more?

Thy going out and thy coming in (three Sherlock/Lestrade ficlets)

Title (for the series): Thy going out and thy coming in.

Pairing: Sherlock/Lestrade
Warnings: religion-bending, kinda.
Word count: ~3K total

Aloha, Dr. Watson (Sherlock/ H50, gen)

In a weird way, this is a companion piece to A Catch. It doesn’t really have anything to do with that story, but I missed John like crazy when I was writing it, and wondered what he was up to while Sherlock was meeting Neal Caffrey in Florida.

Title: A Catch
Rating: pg-13

Yuletide fc: The Sleepover (Sherlock RPF, gen)

This was the first time I'd ever participated in Yuletide, and I felt like I had beginner's luck, because I was matched on a fandom that is one of my guilty pleasures to write: Sherlock RPF. This was a blast to write, and seems to have, if not broken, at least broken through, my bad fic exchange karma.

Title: The Sleepover
Fandom: Sherlock RPF
Characters: Martin, Benedict
Rating: PG, gen
Word Count: 2,769
Disclaimer: BC really did have pneumonia during the filming of Sherlock, but that is the only factual element of this. Everything else is FICTION, and no profit will be made from this fic.

Dean w/o Sam recs (plus 1 White Collar and 2 Sherlock)

Hi Folks:

My third rec post for [community profile] spnroundtable is here: 5 fics featuring Dean w/o Sam--1 pre-series; 3 Stanford-era; one post-S3 AU (all but one are gen).

It was a really busy week, and I feel like I have a million White Collar and Sherlock fics I've been meaning to read open in tabs. Here are a couple of short things, though:

White Collar

We Protect Our Own by anon. (Found via [livejournal.com profile] jrosemary's wonderful White Collar Fixation blog) (GEN)

This is a fanfic trope--character X has previous experience of child pornography--that I usually steer well clear of--it can be such an easy excuse for gratuitous angst and magical-fixit h/c. But--it makes more sense for Neal than it does for many characters, and this piece is really nicely done--with an emphasis on procedure, and what it's like to live with difficult experiences, rather than making them magically go away. The interactions between Peter and Neal are perfectly IC.

Sherlock

Okay, I know there's a fandom preference for asexual!Sherlock--and there are plenty of reasons--both in canon and in BC's performance--for going with that. I've read a lot of great fic along those lines.

However, there is a kind of counter-current for a sexually greedy, toppy Sherlock, which I have to admit I enjoy the heck out of. Here are two short pieces that explore that characterization:

Innominate by [livejournal.com profile] accede (NC-17).

Covert groping at the Chinese Circus in 1.02. Beautifully written and blazing hot.

Timeline by [livejournal.com profile] entangled_now (NC-17)

Writing on the body. Gorgeous! (and if you haven't been reading [livejournal.com profile] entangled_now's Sherlock fic, may I suggest you start? The ratings range from pg to nc-17, and the character work is amazing!)

Forms of masculine address in contemporary Britain (aka: a little problem I have writing Sherlock)

So, let me ask you about a problem I have writing Sherlock!fic:

What casual epithets--non-name words--do contemporary British men use to address each other?

An American guy (depending on the situation) would say: "man," "dude," or "buddy"; or, given the right age difference, "son," "kid" or "kiddo"; or, more rarely, "chief," "sport," "tiger" or "bro'."

And an ACD-era British man might use endless permutations of: "old chap," "dear fellow," "old boy" (or even, as in the Ritchie movie, "old cock"); and, in certain situations, "my dear" or "my friend."

But what do British men say nowadays?

"Lad"? But people who are the same age don't really use this with each other, do they?

"Boyo"? This is too Irish, right?

"Sunshine"? I love this one, but it seems very regional (Northern) and old-fashioned to boot.

So, what do y'all (as even Yankees say in the South), what do y'all think:

Is having all these other forms of address just an American verbal tic (one that was more common in previous generations of British menfolk?)--A dialogue crutch from which I just happen to get unreasonable amounts of pleasure?

Or are there ways John and Sherlock (or Benedict and Martin) would address each other than "John" and "Sherlock"?

(and yes, I know the whole thing must be riddled with class connotations--enlighten me!)

Thanks in advance!

Recs: 4 J2 h/c; 1 Sherlock; 1 White Collar (and Merlin)

Hi Folks:

My second [livejournal.com profile] spnroundtable rec post is here: this one is all J2 non-AU h/c (a seemingly specialized but actually vast subgenre--I'm sure I've left your favorites out!).

And since this seems a good place to share some other recs:

1. Two Pairs of Hands by chainsaw_poet (on AO3) (Sherlock, John, Mycroft--pg)
Even if you don't like malaria!fic as much as I do, this is a funny and sweet piece of h/c. (and if you do like malarial!Watson, it's a real treat to see it done for the 21st century!).

2. I've finally seen the summer White Collar finale (2.09). Dang, that was good! Let me see if I can sum up my feelings in a non-spoiler-y was:

* flail * Neal's hair * Peter's voice * Neal's smudges * bites nails until January *

I've read one gorgeous coda for the ep.:

In little rooms in buildings in the middle by [livejournal.com profile] lowriseflare (pg, gen)

3. I've also finally seen the Merlin S3 premiere. And, well....I enjoyed it, even though there seemed to be a lot of hooey mixed in with the good stuff. I have to say that as much as I adore Colin Morgan, and worry excessively about whether he's getting enough to eat, I am, as always, far more interested in Arthur. The Merlin story arc is too much of a will-he-won't-he (reveal his magic), either/or set-up. Whereas the Arthur story arc--will he (how will he) give up his prattishness and learn to be a great king?--makes room for actual character development.

I don't keep up with Merlin fic, but if you've read anything good, let me know!

A Graceful Retreat (Sherlock RPF fic--GEN)

okay, folks, I seriously thought about setting up a separate journal for this one. Not because it's kinky (it's gen!), and not because I don't read RPF or haven't posted any here (I do and have).
