Whumptober: there's nothing you can do, nothing you can say
( double drabble, WW2 and child death warning )

I have an icon for this!
I’ve been rereading Stephen King for comfort reasons, and I have a couple of observations. First, The Dead Zone—which posits political assassination as an actual solution to a potential presidential madman—hits a bit different these days. Second (and not unrelatedly), while I am happy enough to get the expanded version of The Stand, it was a huge mistake for King to try to change the setting from 1980 to 1990; random updated pop culture references can’t disguise the fact that America changed substantially in that decade, such that characters and settings that made sense in 1980 were no longer plausible in 1990. The teenaged, white Nick Andros would almost certainly not have used the word “Negro” to describe an old woman in 1990. The singer Larry Underwood would have different beliefs about music from the 70s, when he was a young child rather than a teen/early adult. From attitudes towards single mothers to how racism was expressed to the dumping practices of fabric mills, the revised version still reads like 1980, but with a mention of rap on the radio, and it’s not good.

The shirt project continues!
The palette is a little darker this season, I think. The costume designers are super intentional with the color choices, and the palette suits the mood of the episodes so far.

A Cunning Art Fraud, Complete With A Goose
Anyway, the fraud was discovered, I was rewarded by a description of two rooms in a relative's house (29 St Mary-at-hill) and I thought some of you might enjoy the resulting magistrate's hearings:

2) My Britbox subscription has run out, and at an inopportune moment. I was speed watching Passengers, by which I was skipping some of, or entire, episodes and relying on their recaps to keep up with developments. Unfortunately I was interrupted near the end of the final episode and by the time I got back to it, the subscription had ended. ( Read more... )
4) Some interesting details of the AOL sale: "AOL's website traffic has grown 20% year-over-year among the users aged 25 and 54, outpacing the growth in the category of users aged 55-plus...The growth was driven by the introduction of multiple new content categories to AOL.com, including Health, Fitness, Animals, Science & Tech, Home & Garden, Lighter Side, True Crime, Local, amongst others"
I wonder if AI searches can account for this? Granted the nature of these new topic pages was designed to attract views, but I've hardly ever seen AOL as a site turn up in any searches I do.
"Bending Spoons... agreed a deal to take private video platform company Vimeo for $1.38 billion, its largest acquisition to date." I was also surprised to find out that AOL owns Last Pass, so that has a new owner now as well.
4) I know everyone's upset at the rising cost of everything. But sometimes it's the little things that make you mad. My main supermarket has recently switched its sales period from Wednesday to Tuesday after 20+ years (maybe always, for all I known) of doing Sunday to Saturday. This is making a mess of their shelf and data system, because the ad says one thing but there's nothing showing on the shelf and they don't ring up on sale. ( Read more... )
5) "Consumer Reports’ fourth annual digital assessment shows a 50 percent increase in texting and messaging scam attempts over the past year. Meanwhile, a 10,500-person poll from Talker Research indicates that Americans field around 100 scam attempts per month compared to an average of 84 in the United Kingdom. Australians, however, experience half the number seen in the US. But while scams continue to frequently target older demographics, one of the most dramatic upticks concerns younger populations."
The main reasons? Group texts which disguise unknown numbers, and quick access to money apps.

Festivids!
Thanks for making a vid for me. My usual request is that I like to be surprised and I like to let people follow their own creative intutions. But I know that can be hard to get started, so here's some brief notes to guide you if you want guidance.
The Menu (2022) [SAFETY]
I found this movie mesmerizing. I love the way it uses the aesthetics of modern haute cuisine and twists them in monstrous directions.
Adam Savage's Tested (YouTube Channel)
I love Adam's enthusiasm for tools and making things, I love the way he lifts up other creators, I love how he explains things.
Women's Logrolling RPF [UMBRELLA]
The only canon I know here is the amazing defector article Earth’s Best Logroller Has Created Her Own Greatest Rival, and a few YT videos, and I assume you probably don't know much more than me so if you vid this, enjoy the adventure of discovery.
Jet Lag: The Game (Web Series)
By the time festivids is really going we'll probably know who won All-Stars, feel free to use the new source or not. Toby is my favorite guest player, I also love the Adam and Ben dynamics, and I love how they play off mastermind Sam.
Are You There God? It's Me Margaret (2023) [SAFETY]
We are in the Jews dancing part of this request list now. I liked how this movie balanced the grownups and the teens both going on journeys of self discovery.
Round and Round (2023) [SAFETY]
More Jews dancing. I thought this movie was shockingly good. I loved it as a sci-fi movie taking its premise seriously and I loved it as a movie about a Jewish family supporting each other through crisis.
הסודות | The Secrets (2007) [SAFETY]
More Jews dancing. This is my favorite movie about Kabbalah, I love how it takes the life and death stakes of God's secrets seriously while remaining in a more or less naturalistic posture.

Fic: Unimaginable
This was inspired by a passage in
He had entertained a small private fantasy during his early months in London. The Soviets came for him and took him away, demanded information on his rescuers; and he imagined saying nothing, and somehow, later (he was hazy on this part), Bigglesworth and his colleagues would come to hear of it: that he had not, after all, betrayed them; and they would raise a glass to his memory and his reclaimed honour, saying that, if they had not gained much from their trip to Sakhalin, at least it had not been an error.
And I read that and I thought, if that actually happened to him, it really wouldn't go like that at all, and then I had to write how it would turn out.
Unimaginable on AO3 (3900 words, gen, angst, torture, h/c, suicidal themes)
