The Hurt Locker and some Post-War Berlin Stuff
Did anyone see The Hurt Locker this weekend? I love Kathryn Bigelow, and it's been getting rave reviews, but of course hasn't made it to NC yet. It sounds like a hard one to watch, but if it really is that good, maybe I'll try to see it when I'm in NYC next month...Anyway, curious to hear people's opinions/reactions--
That trip to the Spy Museum really re-awakened my fascination with Post-War Berlin so this weekend I watched Steven Soderbergh's The Good German , with George Clooney, Cate Blanchett, and an excellent, creepy, Tobey Maguire. It's not the world's best movie, and I can see why it wasn't a big hit: for one thing, it's more a pastiche than I realized, filmed in black and white, with full-on faux-Third-Man-esque cinematography, and even though Clooney and Blanchett are actors I would watch in anything, there isn't much chemistry between them. But, the acting in minor roles is surprisingly great, and if you like that kind of secrets and disillusionment cold war plot, it's pretty satisfying. This is the gist:
“When you think to yourself, that’s the worst story I’ve ever heard, think again. There’s always something worse. That’s Berlin.”
Random: There was one of those nightclubs in 1950s Berlin that had phones on the tables so that you could call other tables to flirt/make propositions. Here's a picture of one of the phones:
