Remix going live coincided with our week long, fun but strenuous road trip/family visit, so I was entirely remiss about posting about the lovely fic I got, or reading anything else in the archive. Now everything has been revealed, but better late than never, I hope!

This was my gift:

Nestling (The Fledglings Remix) (3342 words) by opalmatrix
Chapters: 1/1
Fandom: The Eagle | The Eagle of the Ninth - All Media Types
Rating: Teen And Up Audiences
Warnings: No Archive Warnings Apply
Relationships: Marcus Flavius Aquila/Esca Mac Cunoval
Characters: Marcus Flavius Aquila, Esca Mac Cunoval, Sassticca (Eagle of the Ninth), Stephanos (Eagle of the Ninth), Original Characters
Additional Tags: Illnesses, Hurt/Comfort, Pre-Slash
Summary:

The winter after the journey was hard on both of them.

This is Esca's POV on the events of the story, and I loved the way it fleshed out his experience, especially the crucial parts of the story that go on inside Esca's head, and that Marcus can only guess at. I haven't thought about the Eagle, or my Eagle fic for a long time, and this remix made me remember how much I love the characters and setting. So a big thank you to [livejournal.com profile] opalmatrix!

I wrote two remixes myself:

Though Seas Between Us Broad Have Roared (the 20x20 remix) (1632 words) by ariadnes_string
Chapters: 1/1
Fandom: Rivers of London - Ben Aaronovitch
Rating: General Audiences
Warnings: No Archive Warnings Apply
Relationships: Peter Grant & Lesley May, Beverley Brook/Peter Grant
Characters: Peter Grant, Lesley May, Beverley Brook, Thomas Nightingale
Additional Tags: Remix, Retrospective
Summary:

After the events of Foxglove Summer, Peter remembers some of the good times with Lesley.

This was my assignment. I think [livejournal.com profile] templemarker and I matched on H50, but I actually remixed one of their H50 stories for a previous remix, so I went looking for something else, and was delighted to find RoL fic. Since I'm still processing the events of Foxglove Summer, I recast this lovely older Yuletide story in the light of the current story lines. It made it a bit (well, a lot) sadder, but I was glad of the chance to reflect on Peter and Lesley's relationship, which I haven't really done before.

Five Times Rust Cohle Stayed Alive (the lend your lungs to me remix) (1226 words) by ariadnes_string
Chapters: 1/1
Fandom: True Detective
Rating: Teen And Up Audiences
Warnings: No Archive Warnings Apply
Relationships: Rustin "Rust" Cohle/Martin "Marty" Hart
Characters: Rustin "Rust" Cohle, Martin "Marty" Hart, Travis Cohle
Additional Tags: Remix, Suicidal Thoughts
Summary:

The thing about the ocean is, it rises up to the meet the sky as if it doesn’t know there should be a line between them. Rust loves it, and he fears it, because it makes him forget about other lines as well.

This was a pinch hit. The original is a gorgeous story about Rust in Alaska, from Yuletide 2014, which I hadn't read before. As always when I write TD fic, I had to go back to canon to figure things out (I may never have watched any other show as many times), but, as always, canon produced new riches, and that, combined with the wonderful details of the fic, made this fun to write (though I wish I'd had a bit more time!). The script and performances in the middle episodes of TD S1 are just amazingly layered, I've found.

And that was remix, which I always enjoy! As per usual these days, the huge bulk of fic was MCU, which I don't read, but I will try to go back and find some stuff from other fandoms.

So, kinda by the skin of my teeth, I finished a line for [community profile] kink_bingo

card and thoughts under cut )
ariadnes_string: (Esca back)
Apologies to anyone who saw this go up in a mangled state on AO3 last night--I was trying to get it in under the [community profile] kink_bingo deadline...It's complete over there now, and this is a cleaned up version.

I was hoping this would be longer, and a satisfactory resolution to the events of "In Any Tongue," but I ran out of time, and it ended up being pretty much a piece of fluff. There may have to be one more fic in this series. Apologies also for the lack of historical detail. If there are any glaring historical errors, PM me.

Title: Narbo Martius
Rating: R
Pairing: Esca/Marcus
Warnings: Set after the end of the film; also, see notes.
Word Count: ~2K
Disclaimer: not mine, no profit.

a/n: for the "vehicular" square on my [community profile] kink_bingo card.
a/n: this fic follows In Any Tongue and With Our Arms Unbound --but I don't think it's necessary to have read those to read this one.
a/n: I've borrowed the Narbo Martius horse fair from Sutcliff's Sword at Sunset. The deleted scenes shows movie!Marcus to be as good a charioteer as book!Marcus. I've also used the alternate ending of the movie.

Summary: An old friend lets Marcus and Esca test his chariot team.

Somehow, [livejournal.com profile] carmarthen prompted me to write my first Marcus/Esca fic since March. It’s a sequel to “In Any Tongue,” and pretty self-indulgent on a number of level. (written fast and un-beta’d).

Title: With Our Arms Unbound
Pairing: Marcus/Esca
Rating: R (for mild kink, not sexual content).
Warnings: blood play, vague reference to previous dub-con/non-con.
Spoilers: ‘movie verse, but using the alternate ending included on the DVD.
Word count: ~1.5K
Disclaimer: not mine, no profit.

a/n: a sequel to In Any Tongue. I think it will work if you just take a peek at the premise for that fic.
a/n: for the “bloodplay” square on my [community profile] kink_bingo card.
a/n: title from the Decemberists, “This is Why We Fight.”

Summary: “Free as the unmoored ship is free. Honor paid or honor lost, I cannot tell.”

Title: Fledglings
Rating: PG; gen like the book is gen.
Genre: h/c. Straight-up, shameless h/c.
Word count: ~4.5k
Disclaimer: not mine, no profit
Many thanks to [livejournal.com profile] linaerys for the beta!

Summary: Marcus was not the only one for whom the winter was hard.

a/n: Aside from the fact that I’ve kept the size difference and age difference from the movie, just ‘cause I like them, this is very much a book ‘verse fic. I think all you need to know about that is that in the book, Marcus learns the native languages and speaks them well. He and Esca spend the winter in Calleva after they get back with the eagle.

So, you know how I've been trying to teach myself how to make icons? I thought I'd share some of the attempts I was least embarrassed by. The line drawings are from the second edition of the book (1954). Textures, in the ones that have textures, are by [livejournal.com profile] erniemay and [livejournal.com profile] proverbsun

Title: In Any Tongue
Rating: NC-17
Pairing: Marcus/Esca
Word Count: ~2.5K
Warnings: public sex, forced coupling.
Disclaimer: Not mine, no profit, no offense.

a/n: Movie ‘verse. So much movie ‘verse. I feel like I owe book!Esca, book!Marcus and book!Liathan letters of apology. I’m sorry, guys—I love you!
a/n: Written for this prompt at [livejournal.com profile] the_eagle_kink, and first posted anonymously over there--but it turned out more fuck-or-die than dub-con. I’ve revised considerably for re-posting.
a/n: No—I can’t believe I wrote fuck-or-die!fic either….I’d blame certain flisties in other fandoms for showing me how interesting this trope was, but really, it’s all my fault.

Summary: Rome seemed very far away.

I was going to wait and see The Eagle with my boys, but they aren’t here this weekend, and on impulse, and out of the fear that it wouldn’t be around next weekend, I took myself off to see it this afternoon.

And you know what? Aside from a few really annoying things, I enjoyed the heck out of it. There’s enough mud and shirtlessness to satisfy anyone, and, yes, the surgery scene is worth the price of admission alone. Plus, I am a sucker for windy heaths and snowy mountains.

Plus, there is a rat scene right out of an episode of Merlin

If it is around next weekend, I expect I’ll take the boys and see it again, if only because they will get such a huge kick out of hearing someone actually say “Formate testudo” and people actually making the famous Roman battle tortoise with spears and axes flying all over the place. Not to mention the moat of burning pitch.

So, sometimes I try to spare you all my random bursts of fannishness--and I tried this time, I did, but, hey, what the hell?

I may have mentioned how gobsmacked and wonderstruck I was to see Rosemary Sutcliff fic in the Yuletide archive this year. I adored her novels of Roman Britain when I was a kid--they are part of a whole clutch of mid-century historical fiction I adore, along with Mary Renault's The King Must Die and Robert Graves's I, Claudius, but, more or less, for kids.

So, I was thrilled to see the The Eagle of the Ninth was back in print, but this turned out to be because there is a movie adaptation, called The Eagle coming out this weekend, starring, I kid you not, Channing Tatum and Jamie Bell (aka Billy Elliot).

Anyway, I re-read the book, loved it just as much as ever, despite my advanced age, for reasons I might expound upon later, and then [livejournal.com profile] frantic_allonsy started a com, [livejournal.com profile] ninth_eagle, and before I knew it, there was fic.

Title: The Place You Are
Rating: a light R, very mild slash
Pairing: Marcus/Esca
Genre: unrepentant h/c, of a variety that was probably old before the Romans ever invaded Britain: leg massage!fic.
Word count: ~1.5K

a/n: a missing scene from Chapter XVIII of the novel.
a/n: title from Peter Gabriel’s “In Your Eyes.”
a/n: I haven’t made much effort to follow the style of the book, except in Esca’s speech, nor have I used British spellings of words.

Summary: If Esca had been ripped from the world in which he had expected to live out his life, then Marcus understood, for it had happened to him too.
